I saw a Buell once, and, I live in Southern California where all the bikes are. Well, actually, my friend with the new Busa serviced a co-worker's 883 Buell sports bike (an early model) some time ago and we ran the Crest with me on my Guzzi and the Buell was impressive. However, it was so tiny and cramped that we both decided that it would not be a viable daily driver. It also had a funny front brake with a disc almost as large as the rim.

Buell is definitely a different animal, but they're sure a lot of fun. Tons of torque all the way up.

I will not contest that the Buell is apparently a lot of fun. They handle well for sure and, I expect, more performance can be coaxed out of that Sportster engine. Of course, I heard that Rotex was going to be the engine of choice in the future so Buell may be intending to up their HP and get serious.

I like the technology in the Buell.

The engine oil is inside the frame.

The HUGE brake rotor.

They are funky bikes and American engineered and made which is cool too

I thought the oil was in the swing arm? Gas in the frame. Or does a Buell have a frame? Maybe I was confused by the big huge muffler under the bike?

You're right, the fuel is in the frame and the oil is in the swingarm.

Pretty crazy! :o

It would not be pretty if it developed an oil leak but then again if the drain plug loosens on most bikes, it would not be pretty either. Early Buells were plagued with all sorts of mechanical issues that intruded on the ownership experience and also gave them a bit of a bad rep. As I said, they definitely handle but they are also down on power compared to a lot of other bikes that handle. But, they are still being produced so who knows what the future for Buell will be?

I actually liked riding the Buell XB9S. I would like to try an R or even the Adventure-Toury version out now.

The thing shakes like a paint mixer at idle, but you completely forget about it once underway. It was a light, fun little bike.

The front brake got cooked, being a single. Apparently it still gets hot, even with all the surface area.

Brakelate cooked the front brake running away from my Guzzi and hiding up in the Crest. He could have disappeared without even using the front brake, but, more is always better. As usual he pulled over and waited for me, but fuel injection really rules when it adjusts for altitude as old bikes like the Guzzi get so rich by 6000' that they barely run. Even then, the 883 Buell had way too much for the 947 Guzzi.
