Life in Mexico.

Post by jhwalker »

Canela, the street dog we rescued 3 years ago, already old when we rescued her, is dying. She continues to try to keep up with the young beagle, but then she collapses and we are not sure if she is going to come back. She has been a good dog for three years. We have taken her to the vet a bunch, everyone loves her, but she is done. Tonight it is clear how hard everything is for her.

So sorry to read.

I had to put one of our dogs down for attacking another member of the pack. It was brutal. Two pitfalls. Very sad.

Thanks guys. She never forgets, it seems, that I rescued her. When I am home, if she can she stays a couple of feet away. As I approach the driveway she has always tried to meet me at the street, and run the 250 feet uphill to the garage. Now she meets me near the casa, and hobbles to the garage, tail wagging, stumbles into the house and then collapses where she guesses that I will be. I know everyone with dogs has experienced this. After our last dog, Flash, died from cancer before we moved into Bell Canyon, we said "no more". So 25 years later we feel differently about Canela, and she WILL be replaced. Pragmatically, we need a couple of dogs out here in the campo with the nearest neighbor a 1/4 mile away. Canela and Pecas, the beagle, really sound off if anyone enters the property.

We have a circular drive with wall between the two entries; every night, our dog would post herself at a point where she could look down both drives and settle in for the night's watch. When people would walk by or a car would slow, she would let out one "WOOF" just to let them know she was there. If they came close, or lingered, then she'd get up and walk to the wrought iron gate and give them another warning. If they stayed, then more "Woof" while looking over her shoulder toward the house for back up. She never barked unless there was cause.

When she passed, I buried her right under her spot.

Good stuff. Our dogs are not as sophisticated... Now that I put a leash on the beagle around 9pm, the two dogs do not chase rabbits the ENTIRE night, barking and howling like before.

The old, gimpy dog, Canela, runs behind the beagle for hours with seemingly no issue and then staggers up the stairs to the casa...

Terri and I head out at 3:30 am (ish) for a 7:4? Delta flight to LA, where we will cool our heels until we fly to Seattle Tacoma later in the afternoon. Should be a fun trip, even if a long day. Adam, Ryan and Brendan and families are waiting for us. It will be good to see the kids (I guess) :-D and in the dead time between landing and leaving, we are going to test-drive a Focus hatch and a Mazda 3 something, because the lease on the car that Terri keeps in LA as a driver when she works there is up this month. She was not willing to lease a GT 350... or even a 5.0
